Week 4: Michigan 24 @ Ohio State 21/OT

Postby Agent25Cent » Sat Jun 17, 2006 2:31 am

OSU scores TD with time running out to take it to OT at 21-21 but Michigan gets the kick and takes the drive for the 30+ yard riccocheting FG and the W. OSU Soph QB Denver Porcaro hits TE M. Mittler on a beautiful TD pass on a TE slant route to tie it on last play of 1st half at 14-14. GG Dooolos, GL with your season bra. fk

The greatest rivalry in college football did not disappoint in Week 4 at the Horseshoe.

OSU received the opening kickoff and methodically drove the ball down to the UM 20. The Michigan D stepped up and forced a 4th down and FG attempt - which the OSU kicker shanks. The drive took up most of the first quarter.

But once the Michigan offense finally got its hands on the ball it struck quickly - with WR Doug Dutch racking up some large YAC:

The rest of the game would be greatly altered by OSU's backup QB Denver Porcaro, who was clearly fired up for the game:

Porcaro moves the OSU offense down the field again, chewing up almost the entire 2nd qtr. Michigan again forces a 4th down deep in their territory - but this time, Porcaro was at the helm and threw this gem:

Another twist of fate would impact the game on the following kickoff:

Image

WR Doug Dutch goes down with an injury returning the kick for the 2nd straight week. Coach Dooolos makes a risky move by slotting darkhorse Munoz candidate RB Kevin Grady back at kick returner. UM cannot score with just a few seconds to work with before half - Mich 7 OSU 7

Here's the 2nd half kickoff:

Grady takes the sting out of the injury to UM's top WR by returning the kickoff for a TD. Coach looks like a genius. Mich 14 OSU 7

Porcaro is unstoppable in the 3rd quarter, and capped off another loooong drive with this TD pass under immense pressure:

Michigan takes the ball to start the 4th and would ideally like a long drive to take time off the clock. They end up scoring a TD on this run by Grady with less than 2 minutes left:

As it turns out, Michigan scored too quickly by giving Porcaro 57 seconds to drive 70 yards for the game tying TD. These two miraculous double & triple coverage CC's send the game to OT:

Michigan deservedly wins the coin flip after that end of game collapse. QB Jason Forcier puts the team in a short FG position, when kicker Bryan Wright finally earns his scholarship with this game winner:

An instant ESPN classic for sure.

I'm amazed at the pass at the end of regulation into double coverage, but THEN, the breaking 3 tackles at the 1 yard line to score with no time left. Wow! This one looked like an instant classic.
