Eastern Illinois vs. Michigan

Michigan traveled to somewhere on the east side of Illinois to take on the lowly Panthers.

EIU opens up their first drive with this lofty pass into coverage, snagged by some sure-handed WR. This would set the tone for, and pretty much be the "complicated" strategy of the Panther offense all game.

Image

Tough to lob inside the red zone, however. So EIU has to settle for a FG. 3-0 EIU.

Michigan takes over on offense, and is moving the ball with ease, but then...

Image

RB Brandon Minor coughs up the football, setting up a short field for EIU.

The Michigan defense knocks the Panthers backwards for three straight plays. On 4th and 25, the Panther coach calls for his favorite "skillful" play:

Deep lob into coverage - and the hard work is rewarded with an easy 70 yard TD. 10-0 EIU.

A disgusted Michigan squad just needed to get on the board. The offense put together a steady drive through the swiss cheese EIU defense.

Image

FB Vince Helmuth punched the ball into the end zone just before time expires. 10-7 EIU. Halftime.

Big guess as to how the Panthers would start off their first drive of the 2nd half.....

Lob ball into coverage. His WR comes down with it.

And on 4th and 15, coach Illiniboy scratched his head to come up with something special....

Image

Another lob into double coverage for another TD. 17-7 EIU. End of 3rd.

Michigan needed to catch up in a hurry. Since the Panther D only sees hail marys all week in practice, understandably they struggle to stop a more traditional offense. Michigan had little trouble marching the length of the field:

RB Brandon Minor atoned for his earlier fumble, and blazed into the end zone to make it 17-14 EIU with just 3:30 remaining.

Coach dooolos decides against going for an onsides, showing tremendous faith in his hyper-pissed off defensive unit.

EIU opts against throwing more lobs, instead dumping it off to his starting RB, Conor Scott. Conor did not get up:

Insert backup RB Phil Kitna. The poor lad. On his first carry, the ball is separated from his body from a vicious Wolverine attack:

Ball conveniently rolls out of bounds, and Michigan was unable to recover.

On the very next play, IlliniBoy keeps playing Russian Roulette and hands the ball to the scared-shitless backup again - but this time:

Image

Chester "Cheeto" McCartney separated Kitna's arm and the ball from his body, and this time the Wolverines make sure to recover the ball. Michigan D: Three plays - 2 fumbles, and 1 RB in the hospital.

Image

With under 1 minute remaining, FB Vince Helmuth strolls into the end zone to put the Wolverines ahead for good. 21-17 Michigan.

Image

With :01 remaining, EIU chucks up a final desparation JJ, which of course is caught. But Michigan LB Shawn Crable, after launching the rainbow armed QB 10 yards, makes sure that the WR does not see the end zone. Tecmo levied justice in the end.

gg Illiniboy. Stick with the lobs next time.
